There will be a special guest in attendance this evening, Haile Thomas. Haile was invited to attend by First Lady Michelle Obama. What an honor! Haile has done some amazing things, and she is only 12. Today, she is in Washington D.C. getting ready for her big night! Read the article in the Tucson Daily Star

Haile and her little sister Nia started their adventure with a web show called Kids Can Cook. This idea was seeded in a Girls Making Media session when Haile was 9. In the session she learned how to edit this video of her and her friends talking about the importance of Literacy.
Haile expressed interest in having a cooking show with her mom. After seeing her speak to the camera in the above video, Quin (Quynn) encouraged her because she felt she had the personality, the interest, and the help to do it. Haile's mom helped her start, and continue, her dream of helping other kids.

Girls Making Media, as an entity, has come to a close in 2012, but the lessons, learned and shared, linger. This great news of Haile's next step has brought to mind some ideas about success, support, and media that can be helpful to anyone.

Key Ingredients for Dream Building:
1) Notice what you are good at, and that feels good to do. Find a way to do more of it :)
2) Recruit at least one person around you who can hear your ideas and encourage/guide you.
3) Connection with a loved one (family or otherwise) who is absolutely supportive of you.
4) Inner persistence and faith in oneself, even when it is hard or seems like your Dream isn't happening.
5) Use the tools you have available to you. Do not think you have to have 'the best of ' tools to move forward.
6) Resiliency comes from being open to where your Dream takes you, even when it changes, and brings things beyond your wildest dreams!
7) The power of these times is that your message can get out in the world because of social media.

All of us can achieve so many things! Trust yourself and your Dreams!

Here is the promo Haile, Nia, Mom and Quin created in 2010. If you watch the State of the Union address, look for Haile sitting with the First Lady! So cool!!!
This experience has been loads of fun and I learned lots of new things! I learned how to take audio clips and pictures and edit them to make a video. I also learned how to fix the format. By fixing the format, my video was able to look good on YouTube and not look too fuzzy. Again, I had so much fun and had a great time learning how to make movies.Girls Making Mediahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08039350881667963934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6806477245578549283.post-67745891464785755702011-01-15T13:34:00.000-08:002011-01-15T13:39:42.071-08:00Women's Commission VideoHey there everyone, this is Emma from Girls Making Media just done with a video on the Pima County/Tucson Women's Commision, as always it's been fun editing and creating video and audio files, i found this video especially interesting since it's the on the Tucson's Women's Commission as not many women or young women are aware that there is such thing, so i did a video on the brief history about it so more people can become aware about the Women's Commission, i hope you enjoy!Girls Making Mediahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08039350881667963934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6806477245578549283.post-53953717781469137252011-01-15T10:35:00.000-08:002011-01-15T10:51:15.551-08:00Angel =P

Ayo., Angel Here.. I am 17 years young and I am currently a senior attending Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona. I was presented with the oppertunity to participate in a workshop called Running and Winning: Women in Polotics. In a rather timely positon, I decided to attend because of recent interest in how government works. My interest sparked through recent events in districe wide buget cuts, along with recent learned knowledge from my government class. Soon before attending the conference, I was presented with a challenging yet amazing oppertunity. My digital media teacher told me that Carol Dow, the leader of the Running and Winning workshop, was looking for a student to film for Girls Making Media. I eagerly accepted the positon. I partially filmed at the conference, but found that my multi tasking skills are not exactly top notch. I transfered my filming duties to another student, and gave my 100% attention into the workshop; a decistion that I am very pleased with. After the conference, I began the process of editing, luckily a process that I am familar with. Using Final Cut Pro, I spent many class hours working on cutting down unnecessary footage and racking up prime b-roll footage. I later wrote up a script that contained all of the criteria that Carol Dow and Quinn, the leader of Girls Making Media, had deemed crutial criteria in the PSA. I continued cutting down footage in order to make it bearably long to watch, and overlayed the footage and voiceover. Today I write from Tucson, where the Girls Making Media editing software is located. I have found my overall experience to be very rewarding, especially because I aspire to direct movies and procede with a career in film. The amount of editing, filming, and networking has provided me with a myriad of invaluable and priceless experience. The learning process that I have endured is one of the best endevours that I have experienced in my short lifetime. Thank you to everyone who has enabled me to complete this PSA and encouraged me to be involved in this great process.

Best of luck to anyone who participates in this wonderful program.

Janice Suess
Girls Making Mediahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08039350881667963934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6806477245578549283.post-3638378263687006022010-12-18T11:42:00.000-08:002010-12-18T11:43:57.949-08:00the me videomy name is pachynne blaine and i just did my very first video for youtube it was pretty wierd hearing my voice
i thought my video was pretty good even though somethings rushed together....Girls Making Mediahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08039350881667963934noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6806477245578549283.post-23455064830517859122010-12-06T18:40:00.000-08:002010-12-06T18:54:45.491-08:00Making Media with GMMHi it's Haile!!

That's me above editing audio files at Girls Making Media back in October. It was so much fun!!

I had the best opportunity to work one on one with Quynn Elizabeth and it was so cool because she is so good at everything with media, and she made it seem very easy. Specifically, I learned how to edit audio files and I was so proud of myself because with her help, I was able to edit some audio files that my sister and I recorded that very same day for our cooking show.

My subject was all about healthy eating and cooking and Quynn was very encouraging and supportive about me doing that project. I think she is a great teacher because she explained a lot of tricks to editing audio, and then putting the voice recording together with pictures.

The very best part was in the end our teamwork resulted in a promotional video for our cooking show that was shown on TV!! So exciting, my sister and I got to cook on Channel 9 and our Girls Making Media video was shown. Check out the video below.

I also got some tips about how to speak into the microphone correctly. It was fun, I got to create something great to use to help me spread my message about kids cooking and eating healthy, and It was a great experience. I can't wait to do another session!

Bye!! until next time, this is Haile signing out!! :-)

Girls Making Mediahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08039350881667963934noreply@blogger.com0
