2008-2011

The 2008-2009 season of Girls Making Media was comprised of five digital media “sessions” of nine hours each (spread over three three-hour segments). Teens researched and produced one video and one audio segment per session around specific women’s issue themes.


Segment topics were: Employment Rights for Teens, Resisting Teen Pregnancy, Pay Equity- Highlighting the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Body Image, and Self-Empowerment “I Believe in Me”.


This project was a collaboration between WomanKraft Art Center, and the Pima County/Tucson Women's Commission. Funding for this project was provided by the Every Voice in Action Foundation ®. Participants in the 2008-2009 season of classes were Maggie, Lupita, Shacely, Marisela, Angie, Amy, Clarissa, Paloma, Danielle, Gabriella, Ara, Flora, Taylor, Angel, Destiny, Amy, Amber, Desiree, Mary Lee, Nautica and Margaret.

31 girls and young women participated in the 7 sessions of the 2009-2010 season.
GMM 2009-2011 was funded by the American Association of University Women.
The GMM Final Showcases, both years, were funded by the Every Voice in Action Foundation.

GMM participants had many successes during this season!

-Margaret won $150 for her video “Sustainable Desert Foods” submission in the Sonoran Desert Museum’s “Green Teen” Video Contest!



-Margaret and Hannah (video about Sex Trafficking) were asked to submit their videos to the Arizona International Film Festival!



-Angel was a finalist in the national Environmental Protection Agency Video Contest!



_Emma wants to be a pilot, and has now been connected with the Tuscon 99’s for flying lessons.

GMM collaborated with the Tohono O'odham Nation to host two sessions of GMM for girls in their community! 11 video segments were created by first time video makers!
