The story of Haile

Tonight is the State of the Union address by President Obama. There will be a special guest in attendance this evening, Haile Thomas. Haile was invited to attend by First Lady Michelle Obama. What an honor! Haile has done some amazing things, and she is only 12. Today, she is in Washington D.C. getting ready for her big night! Read the article in the Tucson Daily Star

Haile and her little sister Nia started their adventure with a web show called Kids Can Cook.  This idea was seeded in a Girls Making Media session when Haile was 9.  In the session she learned how to edit this video of her and her friends talking about the importance of Literacy.

Haile expressed interest in having a cooking show with her mom. After seeing her speak to the camera in the above video, Quin (Quynn) encouraged her because she felt she had the personality, the interest, and the help to do it.  Haile's mom helped her start, and continue, her dream of helping other kids.

Girls Making Media, as an entity, has come to a close in 2012, but the lessons, learned and shared, linger. This great news of Haile's next step has brought to mind some ideas about success, support, and media that can be helpful to anyone.

Key Ingredients for Dream Building:
1) Notice what you are good at, and that feels good to do. Find a way to do more of it :)
2) Recruit at least one person around you who can hear your ideas and encourage/guide you.
3) Connection with a loved one (family or otherwise) who is absolutely supportive of you.
4) Inner persistence and faith in oneself, even when it is hard or seems like your Dream isn't happening.
5) Use the tools you have available to you.  Do not think you have to have 'the best of ' tools to move forward.
6) Resiliency comes from being open to where your Dream takes you, even when it changes, and brings things beyond your wildest dreams!
7) The power of these times is that your message can get out in the world because of social media. 

All of us can achieve so many things!   Trust yourself and your Dreams!

GMM Final Showcase!

The last two year grant period with the American Association of University Women and WomanKraft Art Center has come to a close, with so many successes! Thanks to the Every Voice in Action Foundation for funding the final Showcase! And thanks to the Screening Room for a fabulous venue. Thanks to the GMM interns who helped put on this event, and thanks to Quynn Elizabeth who coordinated it. A great collaboration! Now, on to the next phase of GMM! Stay tuned...

Hey! Paloma here!

The last session of GMM that I went to; I did a PSA about Teens and Technology. I chose to do this video segment because I saw that many of my peers started to become obsessed with social networking, and because technology has become a VERY big part in our society. I have become accustomed to using different forms of technology, so I decided to research the benefits and drawbacks of technology.

I had a lot of fun in this session! Especially since Margaret and Angel were also here the past few times. :D

Gracie- Session 4

Hey bloggers, I am known as Gracie. When making a youtube video, I learned technical skills along with making an influence on other girls. I am insprired to make more videos to deliver messages that mean something to me. I am also in Girl Scouts (as you can see in this picture), and learning these skills has prepared for future events in the scouts (like my Gold Project). Thank you Girls Making Media!!!!

Making a PSA

This is Katelyn sounding off on my experience with the Girls Making Media PSA training program. I learned a lot about digital media and how to craft a short, hard hitting message for distribution. As someone who has written about the importance of giving girls a voice as cultural producers in the past, it was really awesome to actually take part in the program and gain some hands-on experience. The Girls Making Media program helped me to develop the skills needed to get the word out about the issues that are taking a toll on women and girls in this digital age. It was really empowering to be able to respond, publicly, to an issue that I care about so deeply. I will definitely will be using the skills that I learned during this program in the future! I am really grateful that a program like this exists for girls and young women. Thanks so much to Qynn, Stephanie, and the other program participants for giving me this opportunity and for helping me to make my first PSA!
