Making Media with GMM

Hi it's Haile!!

That's me above editing audio files at Girls Making Media back in October. It was so much fun!!

I had the best opportunity to work one on one with Quynn Elizabeth and it was so cool because she is so good at everything with media, and she made it seem very easy. Specifically, I learned how to edit audio files and I was so proud of myself because with her help, I was able to edit some audio files that my sister and I recorded that very same day for our cooking show.

My subject was all about healthy eating and cooking and Quynn was very encouraging and supportive about me doing that project. I think she is a great teacher because she explained a lot of tricks to editing audio, and then putting the voice recording together with pictures.

The very best part was in the end our teamwork resulted in a promotional video for our cooking show that was shown on TV!! So exciting, my sister and I got to cook on Channel 9 and our Girls Making Media video was shown. Check out the video below.

I also got some tips about how to speak into the microphone correctly. It was fun, I got to create something great to use to help me spread my message about kids cooking and eating healthy, and It was a great experience. I can't wait to do another session!

Bye!! until next time, this is Haile signing out!! :-)

Rehema Divine- Spokeswoman for Iskashitaa Video Girls!

Rehema Divine wrote her blog, which shared the essence of how Cannelle, Krishna and Esperance felt about the process of creating their video.

"I have never made a video before, it was my first time. I liked every part of the process, especially the editing, because I learned a lot of things. I feel proud of myself because I heard my voice for the first time, and everything that I said was perfect. Thank you so much for teaching us because we’ve never had anyone else teaching us like you do. We appreciate it a lot, you spending your time with us. I wish that it would happen again so I could learn more than I did."

Leilani's Experience in Girls Making Media

I had such a blast these past two Saturdays and can finally say I have entered the digital age with my new ability to create videos!
The hands on learning method was so easy to understand and coming from a person who labels herself technological illiterate that's a a lot to say! I love the fact we used the programs that are available for free in our own laptops (i had no idea about that program) and am so inspired now that I'm saving up to get my own flip camera.

I did two videos on subjects I feel a strong passion for in my community. The first was a PSA to help promote the struggle we are facing in Tucson, AZ on the banning of Ethnic Studies in the Tucson Unified School District.
On May 12, 2010 AZ Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law HB 2281 that when it goes into effect on Dec 31, 2010 all school districts in the state of Arizona will lose 10% of their funding each month if they are caught teaching ethnic studies classes.
I feel so strongly about this issue because I was an ethnic studies student when I attended Tucson High and know for a fact I can trace back my gain of self-confidence and a voice to these classes. I wish the best for my former teachers who are now some the 11 plaintiffs taking the state of Arizona to court.
I hope everyone learns of our struggle.

The next issue I took on was a Dia de los Muertos message for the 253 recovered bodies of migrants found on the US/MX border this fiscal year of 10/1/09-9/30/10 only in the state of Arizona and just on the US side. That number consists of men, women and children who year after year since the enactment of NAFTA, were funneled into our Arizona desert due to the increased militarization on the main city border points of entry. So much human suffering and dehumanization is taking place in our border communities that I have promised to commit my life to spreading the knowledge out there that all these deaths are not just a coincidence, but were planned.

I hope you all like my videos and get a small glimpse into the world of social activism that I live today.

In love and solidarity,
Leilani

Emma's Expirence

Hey this is Emma from Girls Making Media here for my first session as "Youth Instructor", it's exciting working with these young girls to see what subjects they come up with and what their thoughts are which are often pretty strong thoughts that really need to be heard, it's fun to see how creative everyone can be (:
also in my experiences while being involved with Girls Making Media has been doing a segment with a local morning show (The Morning Blend) in Tucson, AZ.. It was actually pretty fun and exciting doing live television, of course I was a bit nervous but in the end it didn't matter. Everything has been fun, Thanks Quynn! (:

You Are Beautiful, By Angel

Heyaaa Angel here. I love Girls Making Media!! I'm so glad I came back, now as an intern!! I helped my sister Kylie with her video segment, and I worked on my own segment called "You're Beautiful!" I made this video because, everyone is beautiful. Most girls think the are not, but they are!! Girls Making Media is so fun!!

- Angel

annabeth's video

I made a video about beauty because I never understood why all those famous people tried so hard to look a certain way.I always thought it was unessesary and dumb to start or follow trends, so I made this video for those who are influenced by trends.

I got the idea because my friend Hannah mentioned it at the park one day. We discussed how girls and women worried about beauty and got overworked about it.I made a video with her and one by myself. At first I didn't know what to say,so I ended up reshooting it.I put photos of pop stars for viewers to grasp what I was talking about.I hope this video will make a difference in the lives of girls around the world.

Physical Beauty With Hannah

Hi, my name is Hannah, and I made a video about physical beauty. I have learned a lot at Girls Making Media. One of the things I learned is how to edit a video, and about how to get your message out to society. I am glad that I did this class, it has been a cool experience.

Kylies Experience

Hi, this is Kylie. I just finished a video about friendship. I had alot of fun working with Quynn, my sister Angel, and the other girls.

Katelyn Makes Media

Hey this is Katelyn, here and I just finished my second round of Girls Making Media. This time I worked on a piece about the explosion of girls and women who are making music, art, video, and all kinds of media. Being on video is nerve racking but I'm glad I was able to get through it because it was pretty interesting It was also really cool to be able to sound off about an issue that I'm so passionate about...so thanks Girls Making Media for giving me the tools!

Hello! It's Paloma here!

I have now attended another session at Girls Making Media. It was really fun! This is a great place to work because Quynn and Stephanie are so friendly! I hope that I may be able to attend again. I love Girls Making Media!

In this session, I was working on a PSA regarding GMM. It was really cool to create a media peice for my favorite place! :)I was actually creating this peice in unison with a project for my Youth Editing position. I will meet the criteria for my story, but i will make the PSA however I want! It will be attached with my story.... I hope that my employers like my video! They better like it..... ;p

Talk to you all soon!

Love, Paloma

Angels thoughts about session 6

Hey its Angel this time I recorded a video about attending the Expand Your Horizons Confrence at The UofA. It was fun beacuse I went with Margaret. We learned about Science and Engineering. We also learned about career options and we interviewed some very nice and interesting people. I can't believe I came this far in Girls Making Media! I remember when I first started. I am super psyched that Quynn and Stephanie asked me to emcee the showcase.

-Angel

Madeline's first GMM experience

Girls Making Media was definitely a fun way to spend the last few Saturdays. The video i decided to make was about biking. i love riding my bicycle most everywhere, and i think more people need to use bikes as their primary mode of transportation. there are so many benefits of riding a bike, everyone should be doing it.

Read

Hi, my name is Amelia, and I was a hippie child. This is why I chose to create my public service announcement about reading. You see, as many hippie children, I didn't watch copious amounts of TV. I read books instead, and I was read to. I firmly believe that this has helped me become a more observant person, a stronger writer, much much smarter, and an educated, interesting component of society. So thank you, Girls Making Media, for letting me share my opinions with the world, and to all of you internet, try to the resist the draw of the TV, and read a book!

Desiree here, in SESSION 7!!

I can't believe we are in session 7! I remember working on my first PSA in April of 2009!! I came back in session 7 (ages 18-21)to do my first social commentary style video. I was able to speak about the case of Constance McMillen in Mississippi.

With girls making media I have grown so much as a person, and have had the opportunity to speak directly to the public about important issues women and girls face everyday!! I love every moment spent here at Women Kraft with Quynn and Steph. :)

"when spider webs unite they can tie up a lion!"... That quote reminds me to NEVER SHUT UP, our voices matter!

peace.love.&bubblegum.
Desiree

Hey World! It's Aubrie!!

I had sooo much fun here at Girls Making Media and can't wait to work with them in the future! I did a piece on the war in Uganda and how it directly affects women. Now that I know how to edit videos I will most definitely start doing more PSA's at home! THANKS GIRLS MAKING MEDIA!

Thanks, and i look forward to hopefully joining another session. (:

Amy-National Women's history month

I love girls making media! I'm Amy and here at Girls making media I learned about National women's months, and all different types of equality. There is so much to learn about media! The most important thing to me that I am learning about media is how to edit audio. There's so much to learn here, and it's all really important-you should sign up.

This...was...AWSOME♥ =)

Hello, This is Lani here. ^__^I really enjoyed this program for the past 2 saturdays. I have learned a lot about movie editing and sound editing as well. I have worked with Window Movie Maker ever since the beginning of 2008, and worked with Pinnacle Studios. However, I never thought that I would be able to work with the movie making program that I have always dreamt of using: Sony Vegas Platinum. =) It was really cool, and I was opened up to many effects that I can use. Along with that, I was amazed at the program that I got to use for sound editing: Sound Forge 7.0. I have worked with mixing audio in the past, but I have always done it the hard way with Windows Movie Maker. =P This has really helped me out a lot and I feel so grateful that I got to use that program. I hope that I can continue to expand my movie making utensils, but that is if we get the money lol. I am usually working with clips from Japanese anime during my free time, and when I was given a specific topic this time, I thought it would be challenging. When I got some of it done the first week, though, it got really fun and I learned a lot about International Women's Day. I hope to do more in the future because this was too cool.

My Video for the DNA Project!

Hey there, my name is Maggie. I've worked with Quynn for over 4 years and my most recent project is an intro for her Digital Nature Archive Project. It was so interesting working with the project and seeing all the beautiful landscapes across the Western United States.

Hey! It's Paloma here!

I have made a new PSA with the help of Haile Thomas. :) We worked soooo hard on the video! It will be shown at the 2nd Annual Sonoran Science Academy Literacy night. I hope that the people here will enjoy the PSA. Hopefully, there will be a standing ovation!

Haile and I had soooo much fun making this video. She is soooo intelligent. She is a young individual with many talents. Haile is a very hard-working and diligent person. For a nine year old, could never expect anyone to be so mature! I hope to work with her another time because we seemed to get along well.

The video is most likely going to be a success on the date of the appearance. This video was about literacy. It contained many facts about reading in general. I hope that many people become aware of illiteracy in our community and how education is failing many in Arizona. Did you know that teachers are the lowest paid in the nation? In my opinion, teachers deserve more money because they create the foundation of childrens' lives. I hope that the government leaders get their priorities straight. The children are our future, and we will be in their hands when we grow older.

I loved that I could work for such a reliable organization. Girls Making Media is such a great way to relax, hang out, and be yourself! Of course, there is work to do. But, all of the projects that we create are fun and educational. I hope that I have another wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with GMM.
Respectfully,
Paloma McKenna~

Sustainable Desert Food is Complete!

Hello! It's Margaret, an oncoming goer to GirlsMakingMedia. I had recently composed a post saying that I was working on a sustainable food video for the Desert Museum's Green Teen contest. Well, this post is celebrating the completion of that video. Without further ado, I would like to present my eco video, labeled "Sustainable Desert Food"! It should soon be uploaded onto YouTube for all to watch and speculate over. I am estatic that I have gotten to share this eco-full experience at Girls Making Media.
